Re: Absolutely cracking cover
Good stuff, played in that driving manner that most bands cover Chuck Berry music - and probably the way I (we) used to cover it when I was in a band BUT the original is still the best. There was something about Chuck Berry's music (obviously), it had a sort of swing-style to it, at least most of his early songs did. In the '60's whichever band you saw, whether famous or not, would cover Berry's stuff. I reckon the Rolling Stones (in their early days) were the band that best replicated Berry's music and style although I'd rate The Beatles 'Roll Over Beethoven' a pretty good rendition even now (although George Harrison's broad accent added something different).
Chuck Berry was ace - think of the songs he wrote and performed - 'School Days' (which was probably the first Berry song I heard), 'Maybelline', 'Johnny B Goode', 'Around and Around', 'Carol', 'No Particular Place to Go', 'Rock And Roll Music', 'Reelin' And Rockin' - there are dozens and just about every top band copied him - even the Beach Boys.
Top man, top performer, Charles Edward Berry, they don't make'em like that anymore!

My dad's got some of Chuck Berry's stuff on vinyl, absolutely magnificent artist.
Although I thought the original of this song was by The Beatles.

In which case The Manics have done an excellent cover - it made me think of John Lennon as I listened to it! Get your Dad to play you the original, superb in, as I said, a sort of swing style.

This was on the "Masses Against The Classes" single wasn't it?
Certainly knocks their cover of Umbrella into a cocked hat

I'm not sure, I don't own any Manics singles. Finally completed the album collection in buying Lipstick Traces.
I like the Umbrella cover. The Manics are a good covers band, Damn Dog and Suicide is Painless come to mind.

I love the Manics, The Holy Bible being a personal favourite of mine, they had a bit of a wobble musically but Diary For Plague Lovers was a solid set

I loved Journal for Plague Lovers, absolutely loved it. They're a completely different band with Richie James lyrics, and William's Last Words is the perfect closure. I don't think they'll make another album.
