Mike Oldfield
Never listened to this guy before, but some of these tracks are absolutely cracking when chewing your own face off.
Loving this one.

I found Mike Oldfield slightly bizarre and could never get his music, although technically it was brilliant it never did anything for me.

Oldfield needs some listening to but then his music is brilliant. Tubular bells is excellent and Ommadawn, equally as good.

I bought both of those albums at the time but can't say I found much in them.
What I'll do is get'em out (you know what I mean), give'em a listen, over the next couple of days and report back. I'm not expecting much TBH but perhaps there'll be a surprise in store.............

Re: Mike Oldfield
Well, whilst I was poking around trying to find "Ommadawn" or "Tubular Bells" I also came across "Hergest Ridge". I suppose that means I quite liked the music at the time.................anyway, I gave "Ommadawn" a go, volume well up and sat back to see what came through.
It was like stepping into the past, music of it's time I suppose you'd say - "Happy Hippydom" - reminded me I had had longish hair at the time and a full beard - "The Who" came to mind (more the quirky stuff in "Tommy", perhaps the intro of Cousin Kevin, I dunno), then "The Prisoner" (Patrick McGoohan - I know, that was in the late '60's but somehow this music made me think of that TV series), The Pentangle (John Renbourne, Bert Jansch and olde English folk music) oh yes and Nicola - "Nicky" - an upper-class country girl, 'point-to-point', horsey laugh - we lived in Guildford in the early '70's and that country town was crammed full of countryfied nooky. I was a happily married man at the time but our sales reps from "Oop North" used to take it in turns to put Nicky through her paces when they visited and very accommodating she was too, I understand!
Thanks for that jak - a trip down memory lane - can't say I rate the music too highly in today's light but listening to it certainly helped reconstruct a particularly happy period in my life!

With all due respect to your dad I allowed my kids to listen to red-hot arse-kicking music or quality stuff - was your pater into mind-bending potions by any chance?

My dad brought me up on 'Some Enchanted Evening' by Mantovani and his orchestra. That's why I'm such a tranquil chap.

Re: Mike Oldfield
My old man liked regimental music and Gracie Fields, my mother liked Charlie Kunz, Winifred Atwell with a touch of Bing Crosby - I overcame that lot but, "Dark Side Of The Moon", what chance has a kid got? No wonder you've got issues Jesus!

Re: Mike Oldfield
I always felt that some musicians got a bit pretentious and up themselves by the mid 1970s. Mike Oldfield never did it for me, and by the way I'll be happy if I never hear another guitar solo........
God bless punk, it's no accident it came along when it did.
