Depends what you're after.
The Jacket is an excellent psychological thriller. Four Lions is comedy gold.

Going to see Paul on Saturday. We only seem to go to the cinema about twice a year.

As is often the case, the film really doesn't do the book justice. Nowhere near in fact.
I read the book years ago and it still remains one of my all time favourites.

Re: American Psycho
I've only read the book, not seen the film. Its a bit too intense for me.

Yes, 'intense' would be an accurate description!
Very well written though.

Very good writing but quite disturbing themes. I read Glamorama too, which started out well but became totally ridiculous then I gave up reading Ellis.

I've never got around to reading Glamorama, partly because I'd forgotten about it! It's something that I'd meant to pick up ages ago but it went out of my head. Thanks for reminding me about it!
As with all literature, it depends what you like I suppose but I enjoy the intensive style and graphic imagery that Ellis uses to sometimes shocking effect. I think that's one of the reasons that his writing doesn't transfer that well to film.

That's what I am struggling with in regards to american psycho. What are the themes?villainies wrote:Tilton wrote:Yes, 'intense' would be an accurate description!

I think I got:
He puts on a "mask" tto fit in with those around him.
He's just an insignificant clog in a machine.
They are all vice presidents of the same company.

I think it's a cog, rather than a clog.

I'm thinking of the sadistic rape, murder & mutilation. The central theme for me was how banal his or the seemingly perfect lifestyle is. Its been a long time since I read it, I found it hard work if I'm honest and should probably read it again at a later date.

I'm thinking about seeing it again at the weekend.. Honestly the funniest film I've seen in a very long time.

Yeah, you've pretty much got those bits. It's a statement about the banality of life for a certain section of society during the 80's. It portrays these people as being shallow and almost incapable of independent thought. They all dress the same, work at the same sort of places, do the same stuff etc. Bateman realises all this and tries to fit. To everybody else he appears normal but he's obviously far from it!

Re: American Psycho
No problem.
Don't know if you're into reading or not but, if you are, I'd definitely recommend the book. So much better than the film and things might make a little more sense.
