The Americans have trouble understanding the Teletubbies

Heard David Jason being interviewed and he was very sceptical about it.

I think they do comedy very well sometimes. Friends, Cheers, Frazier etc, and my current favourite is Modern Family. But I can't se OFaH translating to the States. Del Boy is too British.

Friends was just a bit of nice amusement. Cheers and Frazier were basically British farce. The only Americans who got them were ones who had travelled....
Another good one was Becker again British humour...
Have you ever watched two and a half men ??? It was their most popular comedy until Charlie Sheen went loopy... If you watch one it is quite good when you see the second one you think I've seen this... If you watch the third you know you have....

There's some brilliant US comedy out there. Big Bang Theory is my favourite at the moment, Boston Legal is excellent too.

I just lerv Boston Legal. It's by far the best American comedy I've seen. It's REALLY good.
I just can't see OFaH working in the States far too much colloquialism. The humour is too subtle on many occasions for any foreigner to understand.

If they're just doing the format of working class boy trying to make it good, then I suppose it depends how good the writers are. Look at The Office, the US version has been a huge hit, but trying to copy it outright won't work in a million years.

How far along are you in Boston Legal? Have you met Bethanie yet?

Big Bang Theory is excellent, Sheldon's character is genius.

Re: Only Fools and Horses USA
I mean the US can pull off some good comedies, some of my favourites are mentioned in this thread already.
Frasier, Becker, Two and a Half Men, The Office, King Of Queens, Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, Everybody Loves Raymond, even cartoon shows like Family Guy, American Dad, Archer, The Life and Times of Tim, etc.
But I really doubt they could make an OFaH remake to crack it in US. Apparently, Steve Carell was really interested in playing Del Boy's charater.

Steve Carrell is too middle class American. It wouldn't surprise me if a black actor got the lead.

Re: Only Fools and Horses USA
It just depends on the writing and who the leads are. The concept is fairly transferable, del boy characters exist everywhere and if its set in New York they will have all their own colloquilisms and quirks. It could bomb just as easily as be successful but I think the OFaH model is very appealing for the masses.

I'm not sure america has the same kind of area, Dell boy was someone who got his hands on dodgy merchandise and sold it out of a suitcase in a busy market square, do those market areas really exist in places like New York?

Street sellers in the States usually tend to be people on street corners who are selling Drugs or Sex

Not sure about Market Squares although China Town is basically one huge market. I've seen a few streets in less fashionable parts where stalls where set up in front of properties selling gear and I'm sure in some of the poorer areas of Queens and Brooklyn that sort or set up is more common.
