Doesn't this sound interesting?
From Karren Brady's column in the Sun today:
OUR bank rings. Apparently West Ham opened a safety deposit box in 1958 and now the bank are no longer retaining this service can we come and collect it?
I cannot tell you what's inside it yet because there are still some formalities to go through as we have no record of it.
But 1958 was an historic year for the Hammers. They were promoted to the top division under Ted Fenton, Noel Cantwell was captain and Bobby Moore made his debut — so the contents could be very interesting.
On the other hand, they could be the accounts. I'll let you know next week.
I'm dying to know what's in it.

Oh, wouldn't that be funny, if we owned the ground it was built on?

Yes, an unexpected surprise. It can't be disappointing, whatever it is.

It could be the chairmans collection of Cigarette Cards put there for safe keeping.... Or a load of Heroine as it turns out the chairman was financing the club with the sale of drugs....

In 1958? Things were different then. It's probably deeds of some kind. Or a kipper.

Oddly, in 1958 we were promoted from D2 to D1, and Bobby Moore made his debut. It was the start of our "Glory Years".

No shit, Sherlock.
I used to work for a bank when I first left school and safe deposit boxes were in common use then. The facility was very cheap to use because the bank didn't provide insurance, accepted no responsibility for the content of the box and in fact preferred not to know what was in it.
Our strong room once developed an awful smell, and it turned out that a client who'd been declined a loan had gone out bought a lot of meat and fish and a metal box, and you can guess the rest. The only example that I know of where someone's account was closed because they made the bank smell bad.
