If I had taken an air rifle to work and shot a colleague, I'd be sacked and facing criminal charges. Surely the police have to take an interest in this, even if his club are trying to sweep it under the carpet?

Apparently he thought it was loaded with blanks. Now, I'm no expert on firearms, but is it possible to get blank lead pellets?
