Why is it
some of the most talented musicians die young?
We know the stories of the famous tragedies, Jimmy Hendrix, Keith Moon, John Lennon and more recently Amy Winehouse but even the lesser known aces seem to get cut down. I'm a jazz fan and exceptionally talented players like Michael Brecker and Kenny Kirkland were lost through illness. I was listening to an old David Sanborn CD in the car today which featured a brilliant guitarist, Hiram Bullock, and I wondered what he was doing these days (I'd seen him play in Montreux with Sanborn, some years back). I checked and, what do you know, he died in 2008 (he'd been seriously ill but the famous "substance abuse" was credited in this case).
The gifts these people had! Their playing will live on forever but why do their lives have to be cut short like that? Is it only us lesser mortals who are given the chance to live into old age? Such a loss.
