To be honest, someone who would make the fans excited. I think I can fairly say that most of the fans are split right now in terms of what to think about GH, but it's a very sensible choice from RL so I guess we've got to back him.
Who would I want in charge of Villa personally?
Martin Jol would've been my no1 choice, but the compensation package probably would've been too high
Klinnsman would've 2nd, but this was a big gamble, and we would've needed a 'transition' season this season.
So all in all, I can understand why RL set the criteria for what he wanted in the next manager, it's more of a 'safe' appointment, if you know what I mean.

So, as I understand it you, Jay, as a fan, would've been 'excited' had Mart Jol been appointed manager, eh?

What's so funny? After Spurs, Jol took over Hamburg and managed to get 5th in the German league, then took over the biggest club in Holland and managed to finish 2nd behind a club that is managed by the tactical genius that is Steve McLaren.
What's not to get excited about there?

You're right, if I were a Villa fan I'd indeed be getting a boner at the thought of Mart Jol!

I bet the Birmingham fans would have been happy for Jol to manage Villa too. After all he did a splendid job for the Spuds.

Re: I Think we start a Protest.
So you lot are telling me, if Jol had been appointed tonight instead of Houllier, the Villa forums would be as busy as there are right now?
Anyway, why not get 'EXCITED' if we had landed Jol? Baring in mind, that comment is coming from JPR, an Arsenal fan, so that would be like me praising McLeish!
He finished 5th with Spurs two seasons in a row....and would've finished 4th in that second season ahead of Arsenal had it not been for 'poison-gate'.
He had a good transfer record, Lennon for 1m, Berbatov for 10m, Carrick for 2.5m etc. Spurs sold Berbatov for 30m and Carrick for 16m.
Here's the general consensus from the Villa fans, regarding Jol: http://www.astonvilla.vitalfootball.co.uk/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=38021&start=35
But anyway, I'm not here to justify anything, was just explaining why I thought he'd be good at Villa and personally think why'd he do well here.
Anyhoo, Gerard Houllier's Claret and Blue army!
