Liverpool's proposed £300m takeover could fall through if the club is docked nine Premier League points

The club would be liable for the penalty if its parent company goes into administration, and media reports claim the deduction could be enough to dissuade New England Sports Ventures from taking over the club.

An NESV source told the BBC it would be "a deal breaker".

NESV's proposed takeover is set to be opposed in the High Court next week by Liverpool's current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who argue they are not getting a reasonable price for the club.

Their parent company Kop Holdings owes £280m to Royal Bank of Scotland and must pay by 15 October or risk administration.

However, Liverpool's chief executive Christian Purslow has insisted the deal will go ahead next week, clearing the club of debt.

Purslow told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "My total priority has been to try to remove the debt which has been put on this club and which has been a cloud since February 2007. It is wrong that we should have so much of the money that comes through the turnstiles or through our commercial activity go to pay interest on loans.

"A bidder who has been willing with cash to rid of us of all this long-term debt is by far the largest and most important priority in evaluating bids. We have done our homework and NESV are buying this business with cash and clearing our debt which transforms our financial position overnight."


Okay, there is a chance that West Ham will be off the bottom of the table come Friday but I cant see that happening.

Liverpool are too big a club to end up in the dirty brown stuff like that other unbeatable team in the 70's, also beginning with the letter 'L'.

they are going in to administration on the 15th..... the yanks wont back down they are getting nothing at the moment anyway so there is nothing for them to lose....

LFC and that pair of cowboys are a marriage made in heaven.....

I expect the legal boys will be able to overturn objections to the sale, thus saving LFC's bacon. If not they're down the pan Leeds-style IMO!

I dont see how they can force them to sell their own property unless there is some sort of clause in the loans... its a bit like me telling you to sell your car

When they 'bought' Liverpool there was some sort of declaration made that LFC wouldn't have to support any incoming debts - that's completely opposite to what happened - and they also made statements regarding the building of a new stadium which, of course didn't happen. If those statements can be shown as being legal commitments then the current owners could be forced to comply with a sale deemed acceptable by the current chairmen. I reckon the cowboys will be forced to step down but, if not, it's curtains for LFC!

Yes.
The administration story does have some legs if RBS decide the club aren't in a position to continue trading, but there's also a big dollop of media hype going on, and I bet the club directors are happy to let the story do the rounds because it increases the pressure on Gillett & Hicks.
