David Beckingham
Finally retires from the game but realistically has been nothing more than a glorified shirt salesman since 2007. It's a sad indictment of the modern game that most of articles written about him don't champion his early playing career when he was a good footballer but focus on his 'brand'. Celebrity and money became more important for our Becks instead of playing at the best level he could after Real. A Shame really as he still had something to offer the game even though he long been over-rated as a player.

In an era when footballers pull out of international squads with injuries yet manage to turn out for their club on the Saturday Beckham is the shining light of his generation. He took great pride in wearing the England shirt. McClaren's treatment of him prompted the move to the MLS a good three years early. Top player for club and country.

David Beckham - the sort of player you'd want in your team, throughout his career. He may be more interested in the peripheral (and extremely financially valuable) stuff these days but, purely in footballing terms he did the business, for his club and country. What has never ceased to amaze me is how he managed to turn himself into the "brand"/"superstar" that he's become - so hats off to him for having the good sense to manage himself in the way that he has. No English player has ever achieved the overall brand status that he has developed and it's not just his football that got him there!

A shining light just because he didn't pull out of international games??? I think that just makes him not a bellend, unlike the tossers that do give up international football for whatever reason. As for moving to MLS because of McLaren that is simply bollox - he went there because he wasn't good enough to get into a top side getting guaranteed football and he was more interested in developing brand beckham.

Considering he was still playing in the champions league a couple of months ago and playing quite well, I would suggest you are talking out of your backside villainies. Mclaren treated him poorly and the America experience was what he decided to do and fair play to him. He also played for AC Milan as well

Re: David Beckingham
Very surprised you're sucking Becks off so much QB. I guess the media like him because he sells papers as well as shirts. The fact is he has been coasting since his move to Major League Sunday Football and his time with Milan and PSG has been about shirt selling and his brand not his ability on the pitch. In 2007 He still had something to offer football in the premiership albeit for a club most probably out of the top 4, he took the money rather than the credible option.

That may be your view, but he has proved himself to be a far better salesman than our resident plonk peddlar!
